stick a fork in this one, daddy

dmfs escape is done. it can be downloaded here. make sure you open the file with winrar or winzip (it’s an archive file, silly).  for PC only.

the game is also posted on a couple other websites, so word will eventually work its way out about it. i’ll detail those once the links are finalized.

now, i wait for the bug reports to arrive.

update 17 dec ‘07: received one report of the end-of-level vehicle not spawning.  most likely caused by too many objects on the screen at once.  not sure what to do about that, to be honest.  hopefully it will be only an occasional bug.  at least the player can press the ESC key to move past it.

total downloads, as of yesterday’s report: 84
we also gave away a few copies at some of our shows this month.

dmfs escape

DMFS in vegas for the next great american band

i’ve been creating a computer game off and on for about a year now, featuring members of the band.  it’s finally on the home stretch, and i am extremely pleased with the situation. feedback from the band has been quite positive, and with the upcoming holiday (and with my s.o. out of town), there will be plenty of time to work on it.  my hope is to have it complete by the end of this month.to sum up, the game mimics ‘journey escape,’ the old atari 2600 game featuring the members of journey.  i took the basic gameplay from that, threw in my own graphics and plenty of gameplay additions (to not make it as boring as the original, frankly speaking), music from the band including our live performances, and even added in some ‘next great american band’ shout outs.in terms of programming, this is my most ambitious project to date.  i’d put the game creation software off to the side throughout most of this year, once my time with the red cross was over and my pieces for them were fairly well-received but not necessarily implemented.  but one night off, a stroke of inspiration, some troubleshooting and bug-hunting, and a little more discipline…by half past midnight i was finished with the third (and hopefully penultimate) version of dmfs escape.here’s a screen shot of the title screen that i’ve been pushing around on websites and discussion boards, in an effort to build up enthusiasm (and momentum for me to finally finish the damn thing).

personal update

the band appeared on a television show last month, and we received a lot of positive attention from it. we might even be able to afford recording the next album thanks to being soundly rejected on national television. a shout-out goes to the folks at vote for the worst, who even interviewed us on their internet radio show. we’re focusing on playing some out-of-baltimore shows in early ‘08, already hooking up with gigs in ocean city, md, and also at SUNY-purchase in new york state for january and february, respectively.

the arts collective finished up a month of shows with some excellent lighting technicians in residence, practically blowing my eyes away each time they did their thing. just as pleasing was the fact that several out-of-state and local bands that haven’t played here yet were on the bill this past month. i’m hoping to set up a springtime show with a label out of cleveland, which would be superb.

the bike is holding up well, and i’m working on a bike-to-work-three-days-a-week schedule. it’s not easy, but i think it’s just a matter of dropping into the habit of it. the pedal crank will need to be repaired soon, so hopefully we’ll catch a stint of shitty weather that will give me an excuse to stop riding for a bit. that’s not unheard of, here. the bad weather, that is.

i’ve been dating a great woman. i’m enjoying the work. i’ve been able to spend some time with my parents and even my sister (whose daughter, my niece, is recovering from corrective surgery to eliminate hip displaysia) and her family. my brother turns 22 this coming weekend; my mother,59.

i still need to inject more activism into life. i still need to put formative plans in motion for the performance piece that happens later this winter. i still owe a piece of artwork to someone who bought a piece from me off e-bay this past summer. but i’ve been able to enjoy a night off here and there, which has been grand.
