illustration friday - tales & legends

illustration friday: “tales & legends.” pen on card stock.

artist comments: well, i have a lot of catching up to do. my pen needs to catch up with the ideas in my head. either that, or i simply need to work in pencil first, then move over it with pen. and why haven’t i tried to use my charcoals yet? oh yeah…it’s because i don’t have any free time. i think this took less than an hour to make, and it shows. it’s like two different compositions mashed together. not so nice, in my opinion. more importantly, it doesn’t capture the image i imagined. i need to work harder.

i’ve rediscovered my fascination with fairy tales, folklore, and mythology once again. this time, my interest lies within the form of the travelling tale-teller: the bard, the skald, the troubadour or wandering minstrel. the one who passes oral history from one generation to the next. although i don’t think this illustration quite captured it, i have a reverence for folklore in all its forms and cultures. it’s the supreme celebration of the mind, its imagination, and humankind’s curiosity of the unknown. it’s become a lost art; even songwriting has suffered a similar death.

leaked u.k. government doc

an u.k.-based privacy advocate organization, NO2ID, has recently acquired, annotated, and redistributed a document detailing a national i.d. card which stands in for all other i.d.s needed in that country. the potential for “mission creep”–how an innocuous addition to regulations or tools gradually takes on more significance and authority, such as social security here in the ’states–is incredibly strong in this case. coupled with this is the fact that if a universal i.d. card is created, and all these disparate databases of information regarding citizens is centralized or consolidated, identity theft is much more convenient for the perpetrator. many privacy advocates in the united states are concerned about such a national i.d. card scheme being implemented here as well, for many of the same reasons.

to sum up, NO2ID and their supporters are requesting that this document be mirrored on various websites. i’m doing my part.

illustration friday: mask

mask, for illustration friday

mask, for illustration friday (incomplete). black ink (from several different pens) on white note paper. the paper was buckled, so the scan comes out a bit unclear in some areas.

artist comments: i think this was the last piece i’d done last before going on a several-month hiatus from illustration friday. as it turned out, this wasn’t submitted in time, and i’d never finished it. my only excuse is that this past year wasn’t so kind. but what makes us entitled to special treatment, anyway? in essence, this is a visualized self-portrait: several times this past year, I simply wanted to rip my own face off.

illustration friday: plain

plain, for illustration friday

“plain,” for illustration friday. black ink on card stock (the back of an index card, for your information). i think i broke my pen point while doing this; the ink doesn’t come out in a steady stream anymore.

artist comments: it’s been a while. and it’s good to be back.

this picture reminds me of a pair of dear friends of mine who live up in vermont. they’ve been there for over three years now, building their own home on the side of a mountain. i visit them in the summers and help them build things, do some logging, haul bags of cement up the mountainside, and so on. they’re wonderful people, and i’m glad they consider me a friend.
